Same-Day DOT Physicals in Altoona, WI (Near Eau Claire)

Doctor performing a DOT physical exam for a commercial driver in Altoona, WI
Federal law requires drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMVs) to receive regular physical examinations. The official name for these exams is “Department of Transportation Medical Examinations,” but it’s often shortened to “DOT physicals.” DOT physicals are designed to detect physical, mental, and emotional issues that can impact a CMV driver’s ability to safely spend long hours on the road. Because there are so many regulations for commercial drivers, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) only allows certified medical examiners (CMEs) to perform DOT exams.

What drivers should expect for the exam

A DOT exam will include an evaluation of an employee’s vision, hearing, blood pressure/pulse rate, and overall physical ability. A DOT exam includes a urinalysis to screen for health indicators (not a DOT drug test). DOT drug testing is a separate requirement that some employers may also request. If drivers take any medications, they’ll need to bring a complete list to the exam, including the doses and doctors’ information. Any drivers that require corrective vision or hearing need to bring their eyeglasses, contacts, or hearing aids. If your drivers suffer from any other medical condition, they may be required to bring additional information. Drivers do not need to abstain from eating before their dot physical exam.

DOT Physical FAQs (Altoona + Eau Claire, WI)

1) How long does a DOT physical take?
Most DOT physical exams take about 20–30 minutes. If you have medical history or paperwork to review, plan for 30–45 minutes.
2) Do you offer same-day DOT physicals?
Yes — we often have same-day availability. The fastest way is to call or schedule online to lock in a time.
3) What do I need to bring to my DOT exam?
Bring:
  • Your driver’s license / ID
  • Glasses or contacts (if you wear them)
  • A list of medications
  • Any relevant medical paperwork (if applicable)
4) How often do I need to renew my DOT medical card?
Most drivers renew every 24 months, but some drivers may receive 12-month (or shorter) certifications depending on medical history.

In many cases, yes. If your blood pressure is elevated, you may receive a shorter certification period. Taking your medication consistently and bringing your info helps.
7) What if I have diabetes?
Many drivers with diabetes still qualify. Bring your medication list and any relevant medical documentation if needed.
8) Do you do walk-ins?
If we have openings, yes — but scheduling is the best way to avoid waiting and get seen faster.
9) What disqualifies someone from a DOT physical?
Disqualifications depend on FMCSA medical standards and your current health status. If there’s a concern, we’ll walk you through what’s needed and your next steps.
10) Is a DOT physical the same thing as a DOT drug test?
No — a DOT physical and a DOT drug test are two different things. Many employers require both, but they’re separate services.
